The new Many Nations Longhouse at the University of Oregon is an expression of the essential cultural values of welcome, community, and learning for Native American students and peoples, serving as a gathering place for students and tribal groups, where Native Americans and non-natives interact. Building features include a central Great Room, offices, a kitchen, and a "living roof." SOLARC provided mechanical and electrical engineering consultation, and our sustainable design innovations include a passive/active ventilation system, with both hydronic and air heat transfer to building mass placed in the floor structure. With no mechanical cooling, it will utilize night-flush cooling of thermal mass. Space heating is provided by natural gas fueled hydronic system, with both in-slab (radiant) and air-system elements. The structure is adjacent to the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History.
