SOLARC’s Vision

To transform our society to one the works in harmony with nature, by providing leadership in the sustainable design of energy efficient buildings and engineered systems, and by sharing our knowledge and experience with others.

Principals

Since its inception in 1996, SOLARC’s mission to increase the sustainability of the built environment continues to strengthen and grow through the leadership of its Principals.

Galen Ohmart, AIA, LEED AP | Principal

In 1997, sparked by his deep interest and devotion to environmentally responsible design, Galen Ohmart teamed up with engineers Michael Hatten and Gene Johnson to form SOLARC. Galen’s goal with all projects is to support owners and design teams in improving the design of buildings, by bringing his expertise in high performance building envelope design, daylighting and natural ventilation strategies. Galen has been a professional architect in Oregon since 1991 where he has continued to pursue his passion for design of buildings that work elegantly and intelligently with the sun, wind, and site. He has designed a wide range of projects; facilitated goals focused on sustainability; and maintained maximum client and community involvement in the design process.

Gene Johnson, P.E. | Principal

In his role as Principal Engineer and Partner at SOLARC, Gene is committed to fostering environmental stewardship through his work. Gene has extensive experience in both design and construction of high-performance buildings and building systems, and is in overall charge of SOLARC’s engineering group, providing M/E/P services to its clients. His broad experience and skills contribute to SOLARC’s goal of continual improvement in the integration of building architecture and systems with the earth’s fundamental environmental systems: sun, wind, water, soil, and ecology. Gene brings a "hands-on" approach to the challenge of finding synergies that incorporate passive design strategies, low-impact lifestyle choices, and high-efficiency equipment such as geothermal heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and rainwater catchment and re-use systems.

Michael Hatten, P.E. | Principal

Mike is an internationally known professional, recognized for his expertise in building energy efficiency. His reputation has grown from an extensive body of unusual, challenging, and exciting energy efficiency projects. He has conducted analysis efforts on well over 40 million square feet of institutional, commercial and industrial space. He has a profound understanding of the real-world of building system equipment and operations, with a focus on energy-using systems. His experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting building systems carries over into his work with new projects both as engineering design discipline leader and specialty energy efficiency consultant. His focus on the role of collaboration between architects and engineers in the integrated design process provides the understanding needed by design teams, both architects and engineers, to achieve optimal results. In addition to his technical consulting activities, Mike works closely with the Northwest Energy Education Institute as an educator and trainer to provide ongoing training in energy efficiency issues to students and the professional consulting community.
